The Fine Print
We take pride in ensuring every product that leaves Grand Valley Fibre Company meets or exceeds our expectations for processing, but it all starts with the quality of the fibre sent in for processing. We therefore reserve the right to refuse incoming fibre that does not meet quality standards to make a quality end product. This includes fibre that has not been skirted sufficiently to remove vegetation, staining and manure as well as fibre that is tender or stressed. Cria tips, if not removed, will break during processing resulting in a textured yarn. This is beyond our control. All incoming fibre will be washed prior to processing. The design of our spinning frame limits the draft of the fibre to a minimum of 3 inches, therefore there is a 3 inch minimum fibre length required for spinning to yarn. This may be quite different than other mills. The maximum fibre length for spinning to yarn is 10 inches. Inconsistent fibre lengths will result in 'slubs' in the yarn due to the inconsistent drafting during spinning. These are unavoidable, however we will do our best to remove these during plying. Mixed length fibres with a minimum of 1.5 inches can be made into roving, batts or felt. Total fibre loss will be increased if the fibre contains guard hair which is removed during the fibre separation process at the carder, although we can't guarantee 100% removal. While there is no minimum batch size and single fleeces can be processed, you will be charged for a minimum of 5 lbs for washing for batches and carding of batches less than 5 lbs. We recommend combining ‘like’ fleeces (ie same grade, similar length) to increase the yield of the final product. While we do our best to limit colour contamination, due to the nature of the process, there is a risk of a stray fibre getting mixed within a batch at any stage throughout the process.
Yarn will be measured into skeins of approximately100g unless requested otherwise. Sock yarn will be measured into 400 yard skeins unless requested otherwise. Skeined yarn is washed prior to shipping and due to the natural properties of the fibre, shrinkage may occur resulting in lengths less than the original measurements as noted above. This is beyond our control. Natural fibres have different densities and therefore different weights, therefore 'yards per pound' may vary between standard yarn charts. We will provide an indication of knitting yarn weights by 'wraps per inch' (wpi) as well as approximate yardage and approximate weight in grams.
Turn around time for processing cannot be guaranteed, however it is our aim to process your fibre as efficiently and quickly as humanly possible. To maintain maximum efficiency within the mill we use a batch process and therefore may be working with multiple orders simultaneously. A deposit of $200 is required with the delivery of fleece to hold a space within the queue. A downpayment of 50% of the estimated processing cost is required at the start of processing. Final payment is due in full before any finished product can be shipped or released for pick up and within 7 days of notification of order completion. We accept cash, cheque, credit card or e-transfer. If final payment is not received within 7 days of written notification of the completion of the process, Grand Valley Fibre reserves the right to sell the product to recover the cost of processing. Grand Valley Fibre Company is not responsible for the payment of shipping costs of either raw fleeces or finished products. We do our best to keep the cost of the process reasonable and competitive, external costs such as heat, hydro and other consumables are beyond our control and may require us to raise our prices to cover our costs.
